Interview with Vera Canco: Managing Korça’s Sewerage Network
Vera Canco, the Sewerage Network Manager for Korça Region Water Supply and Sewerage Company, reflects on her career and the challenges of working in the water sector.
Q: What do you like most about your profession?
“In the years when I completed my higher studies (1982-1987), there was no option to choose your study program. However, I consider myself fortunate to have pursued Civil Engineering at the University of Tirana. This profession allows for creativity, tangible achievements, and collaboration with diverse individuals, fostering both professional and personal growth.
My current role involves managing the sewerage network in Korça and its municipality. Despite the inherent challenges—particularly the sensitive nature of wastewater issues and the need for rapid problem-solving—the satisfaction derived from resolving these issues is immensely rewarding.”
Q: How many years have you been working in the water sector?
“I began my journey in the water sector in 2001 at Korça water utility company. Transitioning from other construction sectors to waterworks posed a significant challenge due to the sector’s complexity and responsibilities.
Korca’s water utility company history is a success story. By 2002, we completed the construction of a new water supply system, ensuring round-the-clock access to clean water. Subsequently, extensive reconstruction of the city’s sewerage network and the establishment of the Korca Wastewater Treatment Plant led to a transformative improvement in service delivery.”
Q: What are the biggest challenges in your work?
“Sustaining and enhancing service standards pose ongoing challenges, especially given network depreciation over time. Despite prior investments, rural areas still face issues with aging infrastructure.
Efficient resource management and fostering human potential to devise effective managerial and technical solutions remain critical.”
Q: What message do you have for aspiring professionals in the water sector?
“The water sector’s vital importance guarantees increasing relevance and attention in the future, necessitating a demand for dedicated and qualified individuals.
For aspiring young professionals, a passion for positive change and commitment to excellence will yield impactful results—both technically and economically.”
