Himara Moves Towards Major Improvements in Water Supply and Sewerage Infrastructure

The town of Himara is nearing the completion of the “Rural Areas IV” development program, aimed at enhancing the water supply and sewerage infrastructure across coastal and rural zones. This project is a joint initiative of the Albanian Government, the National Water Supply and Sewerage Agency (AKUK), and the Albanian Development Fund, supported by the German Development Bank (KfW), co-financed by the European Union and the Federal Republic of Germany.

Launched four years ago, the program is now taking concrete shape, bringing 24-hour access to potable water, proper collection and treatment of wastewater, and the strengthening of managerial and technical capacities within water utilities.

A closing event held in Himara gathered representatives from German partners, the Albanian Development Fund, Himara Mayor Vangjel Tavo, the Director of the Vlora Regional Water Supply and Sewerage Company, Mr. Ermal Murati, along with technical staff from the Vlora and Himara water utilities.

Mayor Tavo described the event as a milestone in the journey toward modernizing the town’s vital infrastructure. “This marks a significant step forward in our joint efforts to provide European-standard services to our citizens,” he stated.

Director Murati emphasized that Himara has become a construction hub, with key investments underway to secure a sustainable water supply and ensure wastewater is no longer discharged untreated into the sea. “Our mission is clear: a cleaner, healthier Himara, with 24-hour water service for all,” Murati declared.

As part of the program, new customer service offices have been inaugurated to facilitate bill payments, handle requests and complaints, and provide essential information to citizens and businesses. Located at “Vangjel Zoto” Street, “Marac” neighborhood, Potam area in Himara, these offices mark a new standard in service delivery.

A new office has also opened in Dhërmi, while another is expected to open soon in Borsh, further expanding access to public services for local communities.

According to Mr. Murati, these investments are not just about physical infrastructure—they represent a concrete commitment to providing dignified and reliable service to citizens and businesses alike.
