World Water Day, celebrated annually on March 22, is a global initiative led by the United Nations to highlight the importance of freshwater and advocate for its sustainable and inclusive management. Each year, this day focuses on a specific water-related theme, and for 2026, the chosen theme is “Water and Gender.”
This year’s theme highlights the deep connection between water and gender equality. Around the world, women and girls are disproportionately affected by the lack of safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services. They are often responsible for collecting and managing water for their households, caring for family members affected by waterborne diseases, and coping with the impacts of inadequate services. At the same time, they are frequently underrepresented in water-related decision-making and leadership roles.
World Water Day 2026 calls for placing women and girls at the center of water solutions — not only as beneficiaries of services, but as leaders, engineers, operators, managers, and changemakers within the sector. Because when water services are inclusive and shaped by diverse voices, they become more sustainable, resilient, and effective. As the global campaign reminds us: Where water flows, equality grows.
As in previous years, SHUKALB actively supports water utilities across Albania in organizing public awareness and outreach events to mark this important occasion. This year again, SHUKALB has developed a comprehensive awareness campaign that includes digital promotional materials, printed educational resources, and special branded items such as T-shirts, tote bags, and pins featuring the World Water Day 2026 theme alongside the logos of participating water utilities.

Water utilities are encouraged to take part in this event by organizing activities in their respective cities. As in previous years, activities may include open awareness-raising events in city centers, educational sessions with school students, and poster displays highlighting key messages on water conservation, sanitation, and the importance of inclusive water services. This year, utilities are especially encouraged to highlight the role of women professionals in their organizations and to promote equal participation and leadership within the water sector.

A special focus this year is also placed on organizing OPEN DAY events at water treatment plants and utility facilities, providing citizens and students with the opportunity to learn more about water supply and wastewater management processes — and to meet the professionals, both women and men, who ensure reliable services every day.

SHUKALB will provide customized materials to water utilities to ensure that the message of water and gender equality reaches as many people as possible. Water utilities interested in hosting awareness activities for World Water Day 2026 are encouraged to reach out to SHUKALB at program@shukalb.al. We also invite all participating utilities to share photos from their events, which will be showcased on our social media platforms and featured in the next issue of BURIMI e-newsletter.
