The wastewater sector in the Western Balkans has historically been viewed as a male-dominated industry, particularly in technical and management roles. There are many potential reasons for this discrepancy, including lack of female interest in the field, gender gaps in hiring, and low representation of female role models in leadership roles.
Overview
Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI)
Students from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) from the USA have collaborated with SHUKALB and are focusing on women in the wastewater industry. The wastewater sector in the Western Balkans has historically been viewed as a male-dominated industry, particularly in technical and management roles. There are many potential reasons for this discrepancy, including lack of female interest in the field, gender gaps in hiring, and low representation of female role models in leadership roles. The students worked to identify opportunities for women in wastewater sectors of the Western Balkans to connect with one another and work toward reducing gender bias in the industry.
Network – Facebook Group
Networking and mentorship are two of the most important factors women credit with finding a job and advancing their careers. The goal of the network is to provide women with the opportunity to connect with other women working in the wastewater sector in the Western Balkans, United States, and beyond. It serves as a way for women to share opportunities, discuss obstacles they face in the workplace, and collaborate on ways to alleviate these obstacles. SHUKALB’s Women of Water Facebook group is the main platform for these discussions to be held. The network will also be holding events, such as discussion forums, to bring women on the Facebook group together and discuss pertinent topics surrounding women’s opportunities in the wastewater.
The students interviewed female water professionals in the Western Balkans and United States to learn about their education, careers, and experiences in the industry. Each woman had a profile created to highlight their stories – click “Read more” to see more!
