Sokol Gjikaj: The Hydraulic Technician Hero of Vlora
For a decade, Sokol Gjikaj has been the backbone of Vlora Water Supply and Sewerage Company (Vlora WSSC) focusing on hydraulics and widely recognized for his constant presence and exceptional problem-solving abilities. With extensive experience, Sokol tackles even the toughest challenges in the water supply network. His dedication to serving citizens has driven him to volunteer for the company, treating it as a mission.
A Journey of Dedication and Expertise
Mr. Gjikaj, when did you finish your studies and what did you specialize in?
“I graduated in 1994 from the Industrial School for Hydrology, specializing in hydrotechnics. My career began in construction companies, working on various buildings in Vlora, particularly focusing on foundations. By using tools such as pumps, electric pumps, generators, and machinery, I provided support to construction companies and also helped Vlora WSSC during significant breakdowns. My interventions with personal tools facilitated rapid pipeline repairs. From 2000 to 2013, while working privately, I provided volunteer support to Vlora WSSC. Recognizing my expertise, the company eventually asked me to join as an employee.”
How many years have you been working at Vlora WSSC?
“After the boom of the construction industry in Vlora decreased and wages dropped, I decided to transition to Waterworks. For almost 10 years, I have dedicated myself to Vlora WSSC, delivering quality work with great professionalism.”
Passion for Service
What do you like most about the work you do?
“Our experience enables us to repair field breakdowns efficiently. We unblock lines in homes, buildings, kindergartens, nurseries, schools, and other institutions, providing timely and professional service. My dedication and reliability have earned me the role of handling emergencies day and night, including weekends. I am always available and tireless.”
What are the difficulties in your daily work and how do you overcome them?
“Work comes with numerous challenges—rain, heat, frost, cold, and more. However, our experience and professionalism have prepared us to face these difficulties successfully.”
You are everywhere there is a breakdown to solve. Do you ever feel tired or think of quitting?
“Indeed, I have been present in all parts of Vlora municipality, including Radhimë, Zvërnec, Nartë, and beyond, ready to resolve issues with full professionalism. Despite the demanding nature of the job, I have never considered quitting.”
A Message to the Younger Generation
What message do you have for young people who want to work in the water sector?
“My message to the youth is: Learn, become well-prepared and qualified, and contribute to your country instead of leaving Albania. It’s unfortunate that many young people seek opportunities elsewhere. They should stay here. This new generation holds the key to a prosperous and European Albania. They must take the fate of Albania into their hands.”
Sokol Gjikaj’s unwavering commitment and relentless service have made him a hero of Vlora’s water services, embodying dedication and professionalism that inspires future generations.
