SHUKALB Participates in Regional WEFE Nexus Conference in Cyprus

SHUKALB participated in the Regional Conference on Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus in the Mediterranean Source to Sea Continuum: From Strategy to Action, held on 24–26 February 2026 at the Cyprus Institute in Nicosia, Cyprus, and online. The event was organized by the Global Water Partnership – Mediterranean (GWP-Med) in collaboration with the Cyprus Institute (CyI), with support from the GEF UNEP/MAP MedProgramme, the PRIMA WEFE4MED Project, and in synergy with the EU WES BCA Project, under the auspices of the 2026 Cyprus EU Presidency and within the frameworks of UNEP MAP, the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), and PRIMA.

The conference brought together governments, local authorities, civil society, scientists, practitioners, financing institutions, and the private sector to advance the WEFE Nexus Strategy and promote integrated management of water, energy, food, and ecosystems across the Mediterranean Source to Sea continuum. Its goals included elaborating an Action Framework to support Strategy implementation, fostering cross-sectoral collaboration, and identifying innovative solutions for sustainable resource management and climate resilience.

SHUKALB was represented by Elisabeta Poçi, Executive Director of SHUKALB, who was featured as a speaker on 26 February 2026 in the session titled “Informing the Action Framework: Exploring Further Linkages.” In her presentation, “WEFE Nexus in Wastewater Treatment & Reuse,” Ms. Poçi highlighted the critical role of wastewater management and reuse in enhancing resource efficiency, environmental protection, and climate adaptation. She shared insights on practical approaches for integrating wastewater treatment within the broader WEFE Nexus framework, emphasizing the potential for innovative solutions to create synergies between water, energy, food, and ecosystem management.

Through its active engagement, SHUKALB reaffirmed its commitment to advancing sustainable water management practices in Albania and the wider Mediterranean region. The participation also underscored the association’s dedication to knowledge exchange, regional collaboration, and contribution to the development of the WEFE Nexus Action Framework, which seeks to mobilize investments, strengthen policy and governance, and enhance climate-resilient resource management across the Mediterranean Source to Sea continuum.
