The work was organized into two basic stages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Installation of a smart flow meter at the main exit of the pumping station.<\/li>\n<li>Use of a portable smart meter to split the network in sections, inspect the section where the higher losses are registered, and intervene in problematic areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Smart metering technology is based on the interaction of electro-magnetic impulses generated from the water flow in the pipe line, and the transfer of this data from the field to the computerized database in the Technical Department of the Utility, in real time, via a SIM card. \u00a0Obtaining reliable data for each pumping station enables continuous monitoring of the work at each station without the need for inspection on the field (Elbasan Village water utility covers a very broad administrative area). The data can be exported to Excel files, and then processed to get the necessary information for identification and analysis of the problems. Based on the data, obtained in real time, the Utility can control the operation of pumping stations, by knowing when the station is in operation, and the exact time that the pumps were started and stopped<\/p>\n<p>Applying this technology and data analysis, the Utility is more readily able to detect the areas with the highest losses. Every month, by using the portable electro-magnetic flow meter, the Utility organizes a monitoring plan for the identification of losses in the network.
