\u00a0<\/em>[:en]\"Logo-new_en\"<\/a>TIRANA, 22 MARCH 2016 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/strong>Today, people all over the world celebrate the importance of water in their daily lives as a basic human need.\u00a0 Beyond that, water is important for safeguarding of public health and environment, and reliable water is crucial to guarantee economic development.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s theme for World Water Day of \u201cWater and Jobs\u201d brings attention to the workforce and careers in the water sector.Investing in water infrastructure and state of the art technology is not enough to guarantee adequate and reliable water supply and wastewater services.\u00a0 Our water supply and wastewater systems and facilities are operated by men and women who work daily to maintain a satisfactory level of service, while struggling to overcome the challenges related to both management and technical issues of the sector.These operators of water supply and wastewater utilities are at the forefront of protecting public health, as well as the environment.\u00a0 In the same time, they have to guard and maintain the valuable and expensive assets of the water supply and wastewater infrastructure.<\/p>\n

On this World Water Day, SHUKALB would like to recognize the water sector workforce as a valuable asset in the development of Albania, and highlight the importance and need for raising the capacities of this workforce.\u00a0 The challenges of the water sector today, with the need to incorporate the rapid development of technology; to greatly increase the public capital investment in aging infrastructure; and the need for guaranteeing sustainable water resource management for the generations to come, calls for highly-skilled and well-trained professionals.\u00a0 Often times, and not only in Albania, development of the workforce and their training is overlooked, while much emphasis is put on infrastructure investments, and building of highly technical treatment facilities.\u00a0 This problem is only further aggravated by the fact that the sector is suffering from an aging, experiencedworkforce, and a lack of comprehensive capacity development programs to encourage the younger generations to enter and pursue a career in water supply and wastewater utilities.<\/p>\n

As a professional organization representing the water sector in Albania, SHUKALB\u2019s mission is to develop and conduct programs that build the capacities of the people who work to deliver water supply and wastewater services.\u00a0 SHUKALB is currently implementing a broad-based effort to develop a national training and test-based certification program for the water supply and wastewater operators in Albania, working in direct partnership with the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, and with the participation of other important stakeholders. The purpose of program is to enhance the competencies of the workforce, while at the same time to establish a level of compliance in terms of required skills and competencies for people who work in the water sector.<\/p>\n

SHUKALB understands that these efforts alone will not be enough to guarantee better performance of water utilities, and better services for the people of Albania in the coming decades.\u00a0 In light of that fact, SHUKALB has been working, since its establishment, to invest in the future generations of water professionals.\u00a0 Through its unique outreach and education programs, such as the University Internship Program and the Young Water Professionals, SHUKALB is continuously encouraging young students and graduates to \u201cstick\u201d to the water sector, and pursue a career that can be both financially and morally one of the most rewarding types of professions for the future.<\/p>\n

The bottom line is that one of the real tests of a truly civilized society is one that can deliver safe and reliable water supply and wastewater services to its citizens, uninterrupted, 24-hours per day, and to remove, treat and dispose or reuse its wastewater in an environmentally compliant manner.\u00a0 Anything that achieves less than that stated standard is a society that is depriving its citizens of the assurances of public health and economic development opportunity.<\/p>\n

World Water Day is an international observance and an opportunity to learn more about water related issues, be inspired to tell others and take action to make a difference. World Water Day dates back to the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development where an international observance for water was recommended. The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating 22 March 1993 as the first World Water Day. It has been held annually since then. Each year, UN-Water \u2014\u00a0the entity that coordinates the UN\u2019s work on water and sanitation \u2014\u00a0sets a theme for World Water Day corresponding to a current or future challenge. The engagement campaign is coordinated by one or several of the UN-Water Members with a related mandate.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Water Supply and Sewerage Association of Albania (SHUKALB), which was established in 2000, is a professional, not-for-profit Association of water supply and sewerage professionals, who wish to improve the management of the Water Supply and Sewerage Sector in Albania, making it efficient, sustainable and effective in accordance with the current laws and regulations in Albania. The Association is legally registered in the Court of Tirana.<\/em><\/p>\n
