Uji i ndotur rrjedh p\u00ebrmes rrjetit t\u00eb kanalizimeve n\u00eb nj\u00eb kolektor kryesor, i cili m\u00eb pas e transporton k\u00ebt\u00eb uj\u00eb n\u00eb nj\u00eb impiant t\u00eb trajtimit t\u00eb ujit t\u00eb ndotur, ku uji trajtohet p\u00ebrpara se t\u00eb kthehet p\u00ebrs\u00ebri n\u00eb natyr\u00eb.\u00a0 Megjithat\u00eb, kjo do t\u00eb ishte situata e d\u00ebshiruar. \u00a0<\/em>[:en]\"Logo-new_en\"<\/a>TIRANA, 22 MARCH 2017 \u00a0 <\/strong>For this year\u2019s United Nations World Water Day, which has set the issue of wastewater as its focus, the Water Supply and Sewerage Association of Albania has used this opportunity to bring attention to the need for significant capital and operational investment in wastewater collection and treatment in Albania for the protection of public health, as well as the environment.<\/p>\n

Every day, millionsof cubic meters of used water are being flushed away from our toilets, sinks and showers, to the wastewater collection system.\u00a0 The wastewater flows through the collection network to a main collector, which then transports it to a wastewater treatment plant, where the wastewater is treated before it is returned again to nature.\u00a0 However, this would be the desired situation.\u00a0 In fact, worldwide, 80% of the wastewater flows directly to the nature untreated.\u00a0 It flows to streams, rivers, lakes and coastal areas such as beaches.<\/p>\n

Albania\u2019s reality with wastewater treatment is quite close to the global figures of untreated wastewater.\u00a0 With six wastewater treatment plants operating today in Albania, on average, only 10% of the wastewater generated on a national level is being treated.\u00a0 These treatment figures speak for the significant capital investment challenge that Albania is facing, and must act rapidly to address, if it is serious about protecting it significant natural water resources.\u00a0 The investment gap becomes even bigger when accounting for the need for wastewater collection networks that need to be put in place in many cities around the country. This investment need is addressed in the National Water and Wastewater Masterplan of Albania which outlines the planning of a number of centralized as well as decentralized wastewater treatment plants throughout the country.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the water supply and sewerage utilities, whichoperate and maintain these facilities on behalf of their owners, local government, are being faced with technical and financial challenges to operate these new facilities.\u00a0 The operation of a wastewater treatment plant is far more complex than just pressing the \u201cstart\u201d button and putting the pumps into work.\u00a0 It has to do with optimizing the processes so that the plant runs at an efficient level of energy consumption and chemical use, while in the same time achieving the required standards of treated water.\u00a0 Operating at this level, requires a well-trained and prepared workforce, with a certain level of competency and skills that are very limited in today\u2019s workforce, because of the lack of history in wastewater treatment in Albania.<\/p>\n

An additional raising challenge that concerns the utilities when it comes to wastewater treatment is the costs associated with operation (energy, chemicals) as well as long term maintenance of these expensive assets.\u00a0 In the near future, water supply and wastewater tariffs will have to increase significantly to make ensure that the revenues cover not only the operating costs today, but a certain part of those revenues is put aside to be used as an asset management fund.\u00a0 Utilities managers cannot be asked to fact this challenge alone.\u00a0 They need the support of the owner, local government, and the customer, the citizens of Albania, so that they will have the human and financial resources necessary to provide a reliable service.<\/p>\n

Wastewater treatment comes at a price in terms of capital investments, and operating costs.\u00a0 Nevertheless, the benefits of properly treated wastewaterare multiple and long term, starting with protection of public health.\u00a0 Additionally, treating wastewater protects the water resources and the environment, which in the case of Albania, translates into better tourism development and economic growth.<\/p>\n

World Water Day is an international observance and an opportunity to learn more about water related issues, be inspired to tell others and take action to make a difference. World Water Day dates back to the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development where an international observance for water was recommended. The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating 22 March 1993 as the first World Water Day. It has been held annually since then. Each year, UN-Water \u2014\u00a0the entity that coordinates the UN\u2019s work on water and sanitation \u2014\u00a0sets a theme for World Water Day corresponding to a current or future challenge. The engagement campaign is coordinated by one or several of the UN-Water Members with a related mandate.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Water Supply and Sewerage Association of Albania (SHUKALB), which was established in 2000, is a professional, not-for-profit Association of water supply and sewerage professionals, who wish to improve the management of the Water Supply and Sewerage Sector in Albania, making it efficient, sustainable and effective in accordance with the current laws and regulations in Albania.
