The National Agency for Water Supply and Sewerage (AKUK) Presents a New Subsidy Scheme Designed to Support Vulnerable Populations<\/strong><\/h1>\n

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy is committed to enhancing policies and regulatory frameworks to improve water access and provide financial assistance to vulnerable populations. This initiative, supported by the World Bank through the Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Modernization Program, implemented by the National Agency for Water Supply and Sewerage (AKUK), demonstrates the Albanian Government’s unwavering commitment to providing equitable water services for all.<\/p>\n

As part of this initiative, the Ministry has issued the Instruction No. 2, dated March 26, 2024, “Approval of Methodology, Criteria, and Procedures for the Distribution and Use of State Subsidies for Water Supply and Sewerage Service Providers for the 2024 Budget Year.”<\/p>\n

To introduce this subsidy scheme and discuss new investment policies in the water supply and sewerage sector, AKUK convened a meeting on May 16, 2024, in Tirana, Albania. Attendees included representatives from water supply and sewerage companies, the Water Regulatory Authority, World Bank, SECO, SHUKALB, and other key stakeholders.<\/p>\n

According to Instruction No. 2, vulnerable populations will receive full compensation for water bills up to 5 cubic meters per month per contract, ensuring access to essential water services. Additionally, the fixed, sewerage, and urban wastewater treatment tariffs for these categories will be fully subsidized. The subsidies will be allocated by AKUK in accordance with the annual budget.<\/p>\n

Water supply and sewerage companies will utilize these funds to provide a 100% discount on water and sewerage services for eligible individuals, covering up to 5 cubic meters per month. Any remaining subsidy funds may be used to offset electricity costs, provided the companies generate over 75% of their water supply through pumping.<\/p>\n
