As the rain overwhelmed the network, Vlora Regional Water Supply and Sewerage Company (Vlora WSSC) sprang into action to manage the surge, monitor infrastructure, and restore normal operations as swiftly as possible.

Director Sokol Kananaj personally coordinated the emergency response efforts, mobilizing field teams to assess critical areas first. Initial field checks showed that neighborhoods “10 Korriku” and “Marina,” which lie near local streams, were the first to experience water overflow. Within minutes, other parts of the city, including neighborhood “15 Tetori,” were also flooded as water spilled over from the main drainage channel.

Director Sokol Kananaj (left) and Mayor of Vlora, Ermal Dredha, at the press conference addressing the flood situation.

Despite the intense conditions, the city’s water stations performed at full capacity. Teams monitored each station continuously, ensuring both drinking and wastewater remained uncontaminated. Chlorine levels stayed within safe limits, and no bacterial contamination was reported throughout the event. The staff worked quickly, deploying auto-probes to detect any breaches in the network and conducting extensive cleanings of both wastewater and stormwater channels. In just a few hours, the floodwaters had receded across much of Vlora, with some known problem areas taking slightly longer to stabilize.

The unrelenting downpour caused frequent power outages across the city, but emergency backup systems kept operations running smoothly. Station No. 115, responsible for managing stormwater, experienced flooding due to high water volumes in a short period. The station’s vaults, already strained by aging infrastructure, were stretched to capacity, highlighting the need for future investment in the network’s resilience.

During the Emergency Headquarters Meeting

The response extended beyond station management, as Vlora RWSSC teams assisted residents with water removal from building garages, cleared the streets of mud, and worked to return the city to normal. Director Kananaj provided regular updates to the Emergency Headquarters and, later in October, addressed Vlora’s Municipal Council in a dedicated meeting on the flood response.

This event underscored Vlora RWSSC commitment to improving its infrastructure, including upcoming projects aimed at strengthening the sewer network and stormwater systems. The recent flooding demonstrated not only the resilience of the water system but also the dedication of Vlora RWSSC to protecting the city in challenging times.

Managing the Flood: How Vlora Regional Water Supply and Sewerage Company Tackled Extreme Weather Heavy rainfall recently brought unprecedented flooding to the city of Vlora, pushing the city’s water and

[213

post-8601","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-newsletter
["GET
